Committee

    John Burrill

I have been riding motorcycles for about 50 years now and have every intention of continuing to do so for a lot of years yet.

I was a full time motorcycle courier in London in the 1970’s and moved to Australia with my family in 1991. I was a rider trainer for a while and then became a driving examiner with the Dept of Transport and Main Roads (TMR). For five years I was a volunteer instructor on the old Motorcycle Training Program that predated QRide. I was with TMR for 25 years. For most of that time I became the subject matter expert in the Queensland and National road rules.

I currently work part time after a few years of temporary retirement. I help to run a successful Facebook group called ‘Helping New Motorcyclists’. We are a safe place where people new to motorcycling can get advice and supervision.

I am honoured to be a part of the interim committee for the Queensland Motorcycle Council.

I look forward to being part of a strong voice to engage governments and other bodies to promote the safe use of motorcycles in our community.

A life long rider, I started with a Honda C90 step-through some 55 years ago back in England (well, Cornwall actually) and still ride some 40,000kms a year, but these days on a BMW. I’m a pilot by choice but have been long retired and choose to advocate for motorcycle riders these days.

I have been the Chair of the Australian Motorcycle Council, executive member of the Victorian Motorcycle Council, rider representative on the Victorian Motorcycle Expert Advisory panel, a founding member of the Queensland Motorcycle and am an active member of three national BMW Motorcycle Clubs.

Plus I’m the Gold Coast Co-ordinator for BloodBikes Australia, so if anyone wants to volunteer their spare time to help the community as a BloodBiker, let me know! See you on the road or in a coffee shop somewhere, come and say Hi and have a chat.

I’ve only been riding for a bit under two years, but have clocked up over 60,000 kms in that time, mostly on rural and mountain roads.  Since passing my first year, I’ve been regularly supervising riders through the Helping New Motorcyclists Facebook group as well.  Through that group, I met John Burrill, who introduced me to QMC.  After attending a few meetings, I decided I wanted to do what I could to assist in their efforts and joined as a full member.

When I’m not riding, I’m working as a cloud infrastructure administrator, spending time with my family, looking after pets, or working / playing on computers at home.

Motorcycles are my passion. From the little Suzuki DS80 as a child on a farm, to my current rides (BMW s1000RR and BMW GS1250 HP Ralle), motorcycles have played a significant part in my life be it on the road or on the track. As I often say, it is not just the ride, it is the places you go, the things you see, and the people you meet that make motorcycling so unique.

Outside of this passion, my time has been spend building, running and selling several high growth technology businesses. In these pursuits I have been fortunate to have gained valuable knowledge on business, people and processes that I aim to bring to QMC for the benefit our of members and the motorcycle community in general. Being a highly experienced rider, working extensively with learner riders, and having been witness sadly to the ‘other side’ of motorcycling, it is rider safety, and education (for all motorists, not just motorcyclists) and the need to drive change for the benefit of our entire motorcycling family that drew me to QMC, particularly as my own children begin to share my passion.
